Sizing up your loft boarding and why is loft boarding so expensive?

How big is 4 boards? Or 6?or 16?

When we quote we usually use square meters or X by Z in meters but can you visualise what that is in real terms? I mean 2.4m x 2.4m is about 5 square meters which translates to a small bedroom but if you live in a big house a small bedroom might be 10m x 10m. We hope to unravel the mystery of all these measurements by using a well known point of reference. Everything needs a reference, a datum, a starting point and for the sake of this article ours is this:

A Ford Transit Custom, our Ford Transit Custom to be precise.

So, you may have heard us mention boards..? This is one board next to our van:

As you can see one board isn’t much on it’s own but we won’t install one board so it doesn’t matter that it’s only small (they might be small but they are awkward to carry through a house). So that’s one board. Now, the smallest we are willing to install is 4 boards which is 2.4m x 2.4m:

Now we’re getting somewhere. 4 Boards is, as we said earlier, about the same size as a small bedroom, a very small bedroom but still enough to store your Christmas Decorations and a couple of suitcases. Moving up from 4 boards we normally go to 6 boards:

Much better, now you have a boarded area of 2.4m x  3.6m that’s big enough to park a Transit van in your loft if that’s what take your fancy. Now we’re looking at loft storage for:

  • Christmas Decorations
  • A couple of suitcase
  • Summer/Winter clothes on a rail
  • Some old kids toys

The most common amount of boarding (if there is room) is 8 boards all told. At this point we are talking 2.4m x 4.8m:

This is a veritable garage load of space. It’s huge, now we have room for

  • Christmas Decorations
  • A couple of suitcase
  • Summer/Winter clothes on a rail or 3
  • Some old kids toys
  • Lots of old boxes
  • All the stuff your adult kids abandoned with you but don’t want you to throw away
  • or

A huge train set or slot car track.

The possibilities really are endless but lets face it. We sent out an email to our previous boarding customers and they pretty much (well, 90% of them) said they us it for storage. Be careful though, you don’t want to end up with:
